Corporate Excellence Award

Highlighting Leaders of Change

MHA's Corporate Excellence Award was established for the purpose of recognizing an exemplary corporation that promotes the mental health of its employees, stakeholders, and community. Corporations with a national, international, or regional footprint can be nominated for this award.

Awardees exemplify leadership in corporate mental health in the following areas:

Commitment: The company demonstrates its commitment to its employees by offering programs, accommodations, and training that support mental health wellness in the workplace.

Community: The company demonstrates its commitment to its community (including customers, contractors, investors, and the general public) through contributions, education, job training, housing programs, public awareness campaigns, or other related activities.

Culture: The company creates and implements policies and practices that de-stigmatize mental health concerns, and ends discrimination against people with mental illnesses.

Catalysts: The company's mental health policies and practices are easily replicable in other corporate settings.

2018 Mental Health Corporate Excellence Award Winner

The 2018 Mental Health Corporate Excellence Award will be given to Chevron for its outstanding work to incorporate mental health and substance use services into its Employee Assistance Program (EAP).

MHA’s first-ever Mental Health Corporate Excellence Award is given to an exemplary corporation that promotes the mental health of its employees, stakeholders, and community. There are many ways companies can demonstrate this commitment, including offering programs that promote the health and mental health of its employees; provide screening programs that encourage employees to monitor their mental health; support  employees who use sick leave time to maintain their mental health as well as their physical health; provide accommodations made for people in recovery from serious mental illnesses; or create training programs at multiple levels for all employees to ensure support and respect.

For decades, Chevron has shown a strong commitment to prioritizing employee mental and physical health in the workplace. Their progressive EAP program offers employees access to in-house mental health providers, while their comprehensive Mental Health and Substance Abuse plan helps eliminate financial barriers to accessing off-site mental health services and treatment. Through their WorkLife Services program, Chevron offers a range of resources including mental health screenings, a linkage and referral system, workplace benefits (on-site childcare, parenting support and classes, etc.), trainings and workshops. Additionally, their Short-term Disability and Long-term Disability plans, Paid Vacation, and Family Care Benefits provide support to employees needing to take time off for mental health, personal and family concerns. As a corporation, it is an advocate for increased coverage of mental health services and workplace policies and practices that foster a “total worker health” culture.

“It is incredibly important for corporations to do right by their employees – and Chevron is doing just that,” said Paul Gionfriddo, president and CEO of MHA. “Large or small, companies need to address employee mental health in the same way as physical health. Through our new Mental Health Corporate Excellence Award, MHA is committed to highlighting those companies setting the bar, and we look forward to presenting it to Chevron next month.”
